I guess you must have a version 2 or 3 modem which was outdated and not fully supported by most ISPs. This cable modem is version 4, the latest version which is certified by DOCSIS2.0 Standard and are supported by all ISPs. In fact, I just installed same about 2 weeks ago, and it works just fine, see the picture attached, along with the wireless router.

The other fact that may cause your trouble might be the MAC Address you privided to Comcast might not be right. You need to call Comcast and give them the serial number and Cable Mac Address which are printed on the bottom of the modem. There is another MAC address called USB MAC Address which is also printed along with Cable MAC address, but they are different by 2 digit. If you happen to use the USB MAC instead of Cable MAC. you will never get connected, and the technician on the other end cannot see the modem. Not sure which your problem was. Please let me know if you have any questions after reading my comment.
-Regards

Computers)
My BEFCMU10 modem was working just fine until 4 days ago. I
called Comcast and he said my Modem was faulty. I gave the modem for my friend
to test and he said it would not work on his computer either. Well, I ordered
another of the same model and when it arrived yesterday, it would not get
recognized or be allowed to activate for online access. I called Comcast again,
and they basically said the modem was giving out no signal. Finally, after going
in circles with 4 different customer service reps, I finally found someone who
answered my question. I was told that this Model is end of Life cycle in
Comcast. Comcast actually stopped supporting my modem and killed my service
without any notice. Basically my modem was fine and Comcast just decided to kill
my connection and leave me without service. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL IF YOU ARE
USING COMCAST! If you Own this modem, be warned if it suddenly stops working. It
is not your modem. Comcast is dropping support and doesn't care if your out of
service until you get a newer modem..
